On August 25, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) announced the official shortlist of films being considered as the Philippine entry to the Best International Feature Film Category at the upcoming 98th Academy Awards.
According to FAP, the seven films that made it to the official shortlist will undergo a selection process, in which one film will be chosen as the country’s official submission to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)—the honorary organization that will hold the Oscars.
Paolo Villaluna, the Film Academy’s newly appointed Director General, emphasized that whichever feature they send to the Oscars will be one that makes Pinoys proud.
“We are proud of these Filipino films—each one a remarkable accomplishment, many receiving global recognition, covering captivating and relevant subjects… The selection also highlights diverse cinematic voices with each having the potential for universal appeal,”Paolo said in an official statement.
Here are the films included in the official shortlist:
- “Food Delivery” (dir. Baby Ruth Villarama)
- “Green Bones” (dir. Zig Dulay)
- “Hello, Love, Again” (dir. Cathy Garcia- Sampana)
- “Magellan” (dir. Lav Diaz)
- “Some Nights I Feel Like Walking” (dir. Petersen Vargas)
- “Song of the Fireflies” (dir. King Palisoc)
- “Sunshine” (dir. Antoinette Jadaone)
In 2024, the Ramona Diaz documentary “And So It Begins” was selected as the Philippines’ entry to the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. The documentary centered around Leni Robredo’s 2022 presidential campaign.
