“Om” is a mantra common to yoga practitioners. Hinduism and Buddhism consider this this syllable to be sacred, as it can often be found in their sacred texts and prayers. In this modern day, yoga is practiced not only by Hindus or Buddhists, but also by people from different religions and backgrounds, for it is found to provide health benefits.
However, according to Msgr. Jay Bandojo of the Archdiocese of Manila,
“When you practice yoga, you are told to ‘empty your mind’ while saying [the mantra] ‘om,’ so you can feel relaxed. But when you empty yourself, you’re opening yourself to possession. You have to be careful because demons might take advantage of (this) empty [vessel of your soul] and possess it.”
Apparently, this method of de-stressing could do us more harm than good according to this religious practitioner.
