Figure skater Michael Martinez has launched a fundraising campaign to help him on his mission to qualify for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.
In a Facebook post he published last week, Martinez announced that he is “officially back on ice” and shared a few updates on the preparations he’s been making for the games, which will be held on February 4-20, 2022.
“To prepare for the Winter Olympics Qualifying Event: NEBELHORN TROPHY [on] September 22 to 25, 2021, in Germany, I am currently doing intensive training in New Jersey, USA with my coach Nikolai Morozov who is one of the top international figure skating coaches,” he revealed.
He then shared a link to his GoFundMe campaign which will help pay for his training expenses since he currently doesn’t have sponsors yet due to the ongoing pandemic.
“So I am humbly reaching out to you to join me on my journey towards the 2022 Winter Olympics and bring recognition once again to the Philippines,” he said.
As of writing, the GoFundMe page has raised US$3,195 of the US$50,000 goal. According to the campaign description, Martinez and his team spend around US$13,000 to US$16,000 per month for his training, supplies, accommodation, food, transportation, and more.
Martinez previously competed in the Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics and represented the Philippines in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games wherein he won the silver medal. He is the very first Filipino to ever compete in the Winter Games.
