Filipina Opera Singer Gets Standing Ovation and 'Golden Buzzer' on Asia's Got Talent

The show Asia’s Got Talent should be renamed Philippines’ Got Talent, because our countrymen have dominated the semi-finals, with four making it to the next round. Joining the dancing Velasco brothers, singer Gwyneth Dorado, performance artists El Gamma Penumbra, and beatboxer Neil Rey Llanes, is opera singer Gerphil Geraldine Flores.

Her performance of Andy Williams’ “Speak Softly, Love,” popularly known as the theme song of The Godfather, got a standing ovation and four “yes” answers from former Spice Girls member Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm, former F4 member Vaness Wu, record producer and songwriter David Foster, and Idonesian rock icon Anggun. On top of that, Foster used his Golden Buzzer, which each judge can use once to automatically advance a contestant to the semifinals.

According to Foster:

That’s what I’m talking about right there. You did not disappoint anybody in this room. It was really a solid performance. Your pitch is great, and I hate people who sing out of tune. You sang really in tune. Good going!

But Flores is not a new face among Filipino audiences. She joined the Filipino edition called Pilipinas Got Talent, and finished in the semi-finals. That season saw Jovit Baldovino as the champion.
