Filipina-Canadian Leylah Fernandez Advances to the U.S. Open Final

If you aren’t an avid tennis fan, you might not be familiar with this teenage sensation yet, but 19-year-old Filipina-Canadian Leylah Fernandez made waves at the U.S. Open as she advanced to the final alongside yet another teenager, Emma Raducanu. Both Fernandez and Raducanu proved just how talented they are in the past two weeks.

Fernandez won against the second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in three sets, her fourth consecutive three-set win, and made it into the finals. She has also beat Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, and Angelique Kerber, all of which already have big names and titles in the field.

Fernandez is now the second Canadian teenager who made it to the U.S. Open final within the past three years after Bianca Andreescu, who won the 2019 championship against Williams.

“Nothing’s impossible,” Fernandez said in a post-match press conference. “There’s no limit to what I can do.” We love the confidence and can’t wait to see just how big this tennis star will become!
