Coconut oil has long been touted as the “holy grail” remedy for irritated, dry, and dull skin thanks to its natural antibacterial and vitamin-rich properties, as well as its affordability and accessibility particularly to those who remain skeptical about higher-end international brands other skincare junkies keep raving about.
In fact, it’s the same ingredient that inspired Margaux Arambulo-Lucena to create her personal care brand Dermtropics, focusing solely on products made with locally-sourced virgin coconut oil, after seeing how much the ingredient helped the patients of her mother, a dermatologist, with their skin woes.
“Unsatisfied with what was available commercially, she had the idea of creating her own soap for our use at home,” Margaux shared about the humble beginnings of her brand.
“Many would come back to ask for it again and again claiming how it did wonders for their skin. At her clinic where I used to work, I would listen with pride to grateful testimonies about this simple, unscented soap born out of her expertise and resourcefulness. I wondered as a skincare professional what the secret ingredient was. What made this soap so effective?”
Her mother’s simple answer: “It’s the virgin coconut oil, Margaux.”
Taking a page out of her mother’s book, Margaux uses nothing less than the best Philippine coconut oil for Dermtropics, aiming to provide the simplest and purest natural remedies that deliver the best results.
At the same time, she supports the livelihood of local farmers and women communities who create their products by hand.
Dermtropics is currently partnered with Philippine Parks and Biodiversity as well where every purchase of their Adopt-A-Tree gift box goes to the planting and nurturing of one native tree. Talk about beauty with a purpose!
Personally, what I love about their products is how gentle, smoothening, and fragrance-free they are. They’re lightweight so it doesn’t leave a sticky residue at all on the skin. On the hair, I’ve found that it really helps lock in moisture which is great for my rather brittle hair. And even though the products are generally free of scent, I really love the way my hair and skin smell after using them (not at all overpowering for my sensitive nose).
