She also wrote, “Does anyone here know who bought my BenCab nude painting? Can I buy it from you?”

Miles does not have the final portrait, but the National Artist gave her his first sketch.

BenCab’s career began in the the mid-sixties as a lyrical expressionist. Today, he is widely hailed as a master of contemporary Philippine art.

He is known for his paintings, especially of Sabel. The emblematic scavenger figure is described as a “melancholic symbol of dislocation, despair, and isolation–the personification of human dignity threatened by life’s vicissitudes, and the vast inequities of Philippine society.”

The artist’s works have been exhibited in the Philippines and in Asia, Europe, and the United States. He has won several major art awards in a career spanning decades.

The National Artist also runs the BenCab Museum in Benguet. It houses his collections of his own works, as well as those of acknowledged Filipino masters, rising contemporary artists, and indigenous arts and crafts of the Cordilleras.

BenCab was recognized as a National Artist for Visual Arts in 2006.
