Caffera: Manila’s First Photography-Themed Cafe!

The People Behind Caffera

It seems that more and more people of today’s youth are taking the risks of venturing into business. Here is how Caffera business partners, Jyka Espinoza, Gab Valerio, Kevin Yu, and Jizel Hacutina, senior Entrepreneur students of the University of Sto. Tomas, started the place.

It was two years ago when they started conceptualizing their business proposal for class. After a series of brainstorming, their Eureka moment came when they realised that they had a common interest in coffee shops and photography. As such, they infused the two interests to create a photography-themed coffee shop concept.

Naisip namin na ito din ‘yung time na madaming nagpi-picture ng kino-consume nila na food and ng mga pinupuntahan nila,” says Jizel who handles the financial matters of Caffera.

Jyka also adds that this is not just a place for pro photographers. Their cafe wants shutterbugs to have things to take pictures of. “Kaya bawat sulok, pati ‘yung food, gusto namin magandang i-Instagram or picturan.

Some photographers have also been here and they even offered to hold small photography workshops in Caffera. They’re still working it out, so let’s just wait for the meantime.

Their investments came mostly from their savings, earnings from their income-generating projects, and help from their parents.

To save more money, they did as much as they could for the interiors of Caffera. They painted the walls, tables, and chairs, and made Do-It-Yourself displays. Some of the displays also came from their own houses.

Last summer, Gab Valerio studied at the Philippine Barista & Coffee and Academy, Inc. to prepare for Caffera. He said the course only took one week.

They are also experimenting on the menu for snacks like sandwiches. Eventually, they also want to move to a bigger place, so that more people can be accommodated and big photography workshops can be done.

When I asked them what advice can they give to young aspiring entrepreneurs, here are their tips:

“Nowadays, important ‘yung may kakaibang factor. Even if your ideas are out of this world, don’t be afraid to share them. Business and risks are inseparable.” – Jizel

“Focus on the customers. Their loyalty and satisfaction should always come first, that’s why we continiously talk to our customers. Learn from their criticisms and take them as a challenge.” – Kevin

“Never stop learning. We always ask for advice from people around us, especially experienced business people.” – Gab

“Do what you love! Kasi when you put your heart on something and when you’re doing something that makes you happy, you’ll be at your best. Always look for inspirations and never be afraid to be different.” – Jyka
