Manila got another taste of Bianca del Rio’s wit and humor as she returned to the Philippines for the Unsanitized standup show.

In Unsanitized, the winner of the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race talked about life during the pandemic, her work challenges during this time, celebrities, LGBTQIA+ communities, and even her fellow Drag Race alumni.

As the name suggests, del Rio did not hold back and hurled insults left and right. That may not fly in today’s cancel culture but she has endeared herself to fans of the show with her snark. If you thought she was brutal on RuPaul’s Drag Race, think again. Del Rio does not hold back in her live shows.

I watched her in 2019 when she first visited Manila for It’s Jester Joke and what made Unsanitized different is that there is more joy this time. Del Rio was obviously happy to be on tour and travel to different cities after being stuck at home during the lockdown. She was having fun and it showed during her interaction with the audience.

Del Rio spent more time with the audience in Unsanitized, asking questions and making jokes (at their expense, of course). It was at this time that I realized what makes her a great comic: she is a good listener and observer. When an audience member came in the middle of the show, del Rio offered to bring the latecomer up to date. She then proceeded to explain everything the other audience members shared with the queen, from their jobs to their life stories and the number of websites a developer created over the course of the lockdowns.

As fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race and del Rio know, she may be mean but she has a kind heart. She may insult every letter on the LGBTQIA+ community but it’s obvious that she loves what she does and her fans. She may not want us to see her love because she’s known as the “clown in a gown.” But we’re on to you, Bianca. And we can’t wait to see you again.
