Beat Project Manila: Professional DJs School Us on Mixing Tracks, Matching Beats and Making Magic

What did we both learn on our first lesson?

1. Listen to the sound of the music.

The hills are alive with the sound of the beats which you have to count. Is it going fast or slow? When does the bass drop? Where does the song’s kick come in? You have two ears which hear only one sound but you have to learn how to concentrate on hearing multiple sounds.

2. Strike the perfect musical balance.

For two tracks to mesh well together, they both have to have the right tempo hence certain adjustments to the speed of tracks have to be made. This is where you need to know whether to push faster or slower for one track, otherwise you get a train wreck of two songs that totally clash.

From time to time, instructors also try to listen in on your mixes.

3. Four ears better than two…

…if you’re a noob who’s trying to learn how to DJ, that is. Since we took our classes simultaneously, Vince and I took turns at the turntable. I usually asked him if what I mixed turned out well and vice versa, eventually improving our ears for rhythm.

4. All you need is love…

…for music! To really learn how to DJ, you need to appreciate the many sounds of songs you hear and begin to count and feel the rhythms unconsciously.

If music is your oxygen and you want to produce your own tracks, go forth and be a part of the Project.

The class was really fun and the instructors were very patient and very nice. Without a doubt, DJ-ing can be quite frustrating at times, though. In fact, I wanted to bang my head on the turntable for missing out the beats of the tracks. Still, the instructors understood our frustration and patiently guided us through the class.

When starting out, you really won’t need much except a profound love for music and a good ear for rhythm. Beat Project Manila’s classes will no doubt develop both of those things for you When in Manila. Plus, if you make nice with your teacher, you could get invited to their next spinning session at a cool party, too!

If you won’t take my word for it, just ask Vince. 😉
