BEACON 2026 Illuminates Communicative Leadership at UP Manila

“A lighthouse does not choose who it guides. It simply shines and trusts that those who need it will find their way.”

That spirit came to life in BEACON 2026, this year’s most-awaited conference held at the UP Manila Theater on April 17, 2026. OrComference, an annual event at the University of the Philippines Manila, once again brought together students, scholars, and practitioners to exchange perspectives, challenge ideas, and deepen the practice of communication within and across organizations.

Organized by third-year Organizational Communication (OrCom) students, BEACON served as a space where communication was explored through communicative leadership—one that uncovers truth, strengthens connections, and drives purposeful ventures. Anchored on Illuminating Communication Across Horizons, BEACON 2026 highlighted how communication serves as a guiding light across contexts and communities.

As BEACON 2026 defined its purpose, it became clear that its meaning derived from the symbolism behind its name. “BEACON stands as a symbol of light amid uncertainty—an essential guide for those navigating uncharted waters. Like a lighthouse that rises tall and sturdy in isolation, a beacon does not follow the crowd; it remains firm, visible, and intentional. It illuminates paths not by overpowering the darkness, but by offering clarity, direction, and reassurance to those willing to explore and venture forward,” shared Jan Lloyd Concepcion, BEACON’s conference director.

At its core, BEACON 2026 unfolded through the pillars: Being (The Light Within), Bringing (The Light Forward), and Building (The Light Together)—each representing the power of communicative leadership by shaping identity from within, carrying voices forward, and bringing voices together.

The conference would not have been made possible without the distinguished speakers who brought its core pillars to life. KC Ico centered her speech on Being: The Light Within, sharing her journey as a digital content creator who turned academic struggles into relatable “ate” advice for over 1.8 million followers, emphasizing how one’s voice and inner light can inspire meaningful change. KC noted, “If you don’t know who you are, your being, it will be difficult to lead others—you won’t get the message across.” Her words served as a reminder that authentic leadership begins with self-awareness.

Korynne Garcia brought the second pillar, Bringing: The Light Forward, to life through her work at the Department of Health’s Health Promotion Bureau (DOH-HPB) under Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), highlighting how empathy and precision build inclusive communication and shared understanding. Drawing from her experience as an Advocacy Co-Lead of Metro Manila Pride, Korynne challenged future leaders to move beyond simply delivering messages, emphasizing that “Communicative leadership is not about being the voice. It is about making sure that no voice stands alone.”

Sarah Elago anchored the final pillar, Building: The Light Together, drawing from her experience as a former Kabataan Partylist representative and current Gabriela Women’s Party representative. She reminded the audience that communicative leadership is a collective effort that drives inclusive and purpose-driven action. Anchored in her advocacy work, Sarah left a quiet but powerful truth rooted in her experience with stuttering: “Stuttering is okay because what I say is worth repeating. Hindi ito tungkol lang sa iisang boses, pero mas maraming boses ang nagsasalita para sa mas malaki.”

BEACON 2026 became more than just a one-day conference. It stood as a constant reminder that communication, when led with purpose, does not just connect people—it moves and illuminates them. Every dialogue and insight shared on April 17 proved that one of the most powerful things a person can do is learn to lead with their voice and use it to light the way for others.
