Bambu Lab A1: A Beginner-Friendly 3D Printer? | Review

Like a lot of people, I have always been fascinated by the concept of 3D printing, but have always thought that it was far too technical for me to learn and was best left to the creative professionals. So when Bambu Lab introduced its Bambu Lab A1 printer to the Filipino market early this year, with the intent of proving just how naturally it can fit in any home, office, or creative space and be used by absolute beginners such as myself, I knew I had to have a first-hand experience.

For context, I have never 3D printed anything in my entire life. The little knowledge I have about it mainly came from watching YouTubers print things for their creative projects or to help tidy up their workspaces. I had no idea how it worked, or how people built models to print, or how the stuff actually gets made. I was coming into this whole thing completely blind, which meant I truly got to test if the Bambu Lab A1 3D printer was indeed beginner-friendly.

The Setup

The setup of the Bambu Lab A1 was surprisingly less complicated than I had initially feared. To be fair, I had my partner help me throughout the process, but the instruction manual was so easy to understand and follow that I could have successfully tackled it solo.

The Printing Experience

What surprised me is that, once the setup was done, the hard part was pretty much over.

With the Bambu Lab A1 plugged in and turned on, all that was left to do was to download the Bambu Handy smartphone app, register my 3D printer, and let it begin its auto-calibration which took less than 30 minutes.

Then came the fun part: actually 3D-printing something!

The Bambu Lab A1 comes pre-loaded with a few designs, and the touchscreen is so simple to navigate that I had my first print started in no time. After printing a couple of the pre-loaded projects, I then felt ready to hop onto MakerWorld through the Bambu Handy app and browse the many different and cool designs by other creators.

Even printing these designs was a painless experience. It was just a process of selecting a project I liked, setting the filament color/s and the number of copies I wanted to print, and hitting the “start print” button to watch the magic happen. Completely foolproof!

Here’s a look at all the things I 3D-printed this past week:

It’s quite impressive how high the quality of each 3D print is, considering how fast they’re all printed, thanks to its active flow-rate compression. Each corner feels so smooth, and the color transitions are seamless for multi-color prints. (Note: I used Bambu Lab PLA Basic filaments, all loaded on an AMS Lite.)

And contrary to what I had initially expected, 3D printing with the Bambu Lab A1 isn’t at all loud, despite it not having an enclosure. One of its key features is its active motor noise canceling, which means that I don’t have to worry about it disrupting my sleep or focus.

Maintenance

It doesn’t require much to maintain the Bambu Lab A1 printer either. All that’s required is to keep it clean from dust and grit and to lubricate the rails every now and then. The Bambu Lab A1 was built for consistency and longevity, so I feel very confident that it’ll take a very long time before it starts to wear down.

Final Thoughts

So, is the Bambu Lab A1 a beginner-friendly 3D printer? Absolutely. The Bambu Lab A1 proves that 3D printing can be more accessible, practical, and relevant to daily life. It isn’t just for professionals anymore and no longer requires deep, technical knowledge. With the Bambu Lab A1, 3D printing can be seamlessly integrated into home and work use, supporting creative hobbies, practical home design, educational purposes, and more.

There are endless possibilities that I can keep exploring with the Bambu Lab A1, and I can’t wait to show everyone all my creations from here on out!

Bambu Lab can be found at its authorized reseller on the 4th floor of One Ayala Mall, Makati City.
