According to a report by The Korea Herald, Baek was able to save five lives through organ donation, as confirmed by the Korea Organ Donation Agency. The agency shared that she donated her heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.
Details surrounding her death have not been disclosed.
Anton Hur, the memoir’s translator, paid tribute to the South Korean author in an Instagram post.
“Her readers will know she touched yet millions of lives more with her writing. My thoughts are with her family,” he wrote.
Baek Se-hee is best known for the 2018 memoir “I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki,” which followed her conversations with her psychiatrist regarding her depression. The book also tackled mental health and the everyday struggles of living with dysthymia or persistent depressive disorder.
Critics and readers praised the book’s heartfelt and honest writing, as it helped destigmatize mental health in South Korea, where the topic was rarely discussed.
In 2019, she released the sequel “I Want to Die but I Still Want to Eat Tteokbokki.”
May she rest in peace.
