The ASEAN Youth Organization Philippines, in partnership with Google.org and led by Code.org, successfully concluded the Hour of Code: AI Ready ASEAN Initiative on September 8, 2025, via Zoom.
The event gathered experts in artificial intelligence (AI), digital innovation, and technology to discuss the growing importance of AI in today’s workforce. As AI tools—from chatbots to generative content—become more widespread, the discussion highlighted the need to balance innovation with ethical and responsible use.
“Digitalization is not just a tool for progress but a bridge toward a more inclusive and empowered future,” said Catherine Jalandoni of the Global AI Council, stressing that while AI opens opportunities and simplifies tasks, its use must remain fair and responsible for all sectors.
Nathan Samiley, Deputy Executive Director of the Analytics & AI Association of the Philippines, added that “AI is not just a technology but a business concept and an integral part of society.” He emphasized that while AI may threaten certain jobs, it also signals the need for reskilling and policy-driven workforce development focused on ethical and governance frameworks to prepare youth for an AI-driven future.
In the Philippines, several government agencies are developing AI-related policies on data privacy, capacity building, and governance frameworks. However, the lack of legally binding regulations continues to create imbalances and distrust in AI adoption.
Dr. Maha Lea V. Ravago, Director and Chief Executive of SEAMEO Innotech, noted that “AI can support progress, but only if guided by people who understand its potential and limits.” She emphasized that while AI enhances efficiency in learning and education, it also risks fostering overreliance, urging the youth to take a critical and proactive stance in shaping AI’s role in society.
The event concluded with a call to action from Rosken Casano, Program Manager and Project Lead of ASEAN Youth Organization Philippines.
“AI should not replace but assist people. The use of AI should always be ethical and responsible, and the youth are the vanguard of this technological advancement,” Casano said.
The Hour of Code: AI Ready ASEAN Initiative is part of a global movement promoting accessible computer science education, equipping the youth for an AI-ready future through interactive learning sessions led by trained Master Trainers.
