When Dining With a Group, Should You Split the Check or Pay Together?

The Daily Dot recently reported a restaurant server sparking a new online debate: when dining with a group, should you split the check or pay together?

The now-deleted video showed the server holding a long line of receipts attached to the printer, with an overlay text saying: “When a table of 18 guests (idiots) wants to split the bill.” He continued in the caption, “If you’re going to a restaurant with a big group, please avoid this. Instead, transfer to one person from your group and let one person pay the full amount. I think that’s the easiest way. Please don’t ask to split the bill in busy hours.”

Of course, viewers had mixed reactions. Some TikTok users agreed in the comments, saying “I don’t understand why people still do this,” and “I would never have a server split the bill that many ways.”

On the other hand, others argued that “it is NOT about your convenience, it is about the customers’,” and that “if you don’t like it, don’t work as a server.”

Meanwhile, a couple of comments were aimed at their system. “Not our fault your system is obsolete,” they pointed out, and suggested to “improve the tech.”
