To Those Who Choose to Be Alone on Christmas

Dear you…you, who’s spending Christmas alone, it’s not so bad.

For most people, Christmas is all about spending time with family and loved ones. But to those who choose to be alone, it’s fine. But don’t kid yourself that it’s not cold and quiet because it also is, but that’s fine too.

I’m alone on Christmas day because I left home. Although, “home” can mean differently to everyone. It can be a friend, a lover, or a family member. And leaving a home can get sad and scary.

These feelings get stronger on days like this. But as the adage goes, being alone doesn’t have to be lonely. I made the decision to leave and looking at the bigger picture now, I could say that it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

Cold is the absence of heat… I’m talking about the rage and anger in your heart that’s been keeping you on fire. How long did you keep it in? Once you leave a “home,” you will be free from toxic relationships that have been weighing you down. To be honest, it feels… maybe, cold; but mostly, light.

That cool feeling is actually the feeling of a breath of fresh air brushing through your skin–that’s what freedom feels like. Like a breeze from an empty space that wishes to be filled with new stuff, because an empty room is also an opportunity to start anew. So feel it. Accept it. And when new things, people, or experiences come in, be open to letting them in.

Quiet, on the other hand, is the sound of peace. The peace that comes with our freedom from never-ending arguments, random anxiety attacks, and just all the unnecessary noise that keeps us from living our lives to the fullest. I learned that it’s when you’re alone that you can truly take charge of your own life. You’ll be able to make your own decisions like how you want to wake up in the morning and how you want to spend your evenings. And that’s when you’ll realize who you really are–by defining what matters to you the most.

To those who are spending Christmas alone for the first time this year, there’s no need to be sad and scared. Silence is not scary. In fact, silence gives you the chance to hear what your heart truly wants. Without the negativity that clouds your thoughts, what is your heart telling you? Listen to it. Follow it. When you’ve found clarity in peace, you’ll be brave enough to conquer anything.

So stop second-guessing your decision to leave, and start enjoying your own company instead. It’s been two years since I made that decision and I’ve never regretted it ever since. Back then, I believed it was the best course of action and I’ve worked hard to prove myself right. Trust that you will too, at your own time.

Just remember: on cold and quiet days like this, hang tight. Start cozying up to new beginnings, and listen to your heart and let it guide you.

For most people, Christmas is all about spending time with family and loved ones. But to those who don’t have one at the moment, it’s okay. Because it’s better to spend it alone than in chaos; and for as long as we live, we can keep on working on how we want to spend our future Christmases.
