As ’90s kids who grew up watching The Powerpuff Girls on Cartoon Network, we were excited when we first heard about a live-action adaptation called Powerpuff. But it looks like we’re going to have to wait a little longer since the pilot is being reworked because the current episode was “too campy.”
According to Mark Pedowitz, the chairman and CEO of CW, “The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros. TV] studios.”
He added, “In this case the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.”
The good news is that the cast, the writers, and the producers will stay the same as they rework the pilot.
Powerpuff follows Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as disillusioned twentysomethings who felt bad about losing their childhood to fighting crime.
The three superheroes will be played by Chloe Bennet (Blossom), Dove Cameron (Bubbles), and Yana Perrault (Buttercup). They are joined by Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as Jojo Mondel (the son of Mojo Jojo), and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum. Tom Kenny, who narrated the show in the original cartoons, will reprise his role.
The Powerpuff Girls originally ran from 1998 to 2005. The series told the adventures of three kindergarten-aged girls who must fight crime in the city of Townsville. The show was received well, with Peter Marks of The New York Times noting that it contains “the sort of playful satire that can appeal as much to a viewer of 37 as 7.” In 2006, IGN ranked the show 18th in its list of the Top 25 Primetime Animated Series of All Time.
It has been recognized by several award-winning bodies and has won two Primetime Emmys and two Annies.
There is no word when Powerpuff will be available.
