8 Reasons Why Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider’s Concert in Manila Was Unforgettable!
When in Manila, the opportunity to watch famous, good looking YouTube sensations rarely comes around. Still, we were lucky enough to be graced by Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider, and what a privilege it was indeed! The SMX Convention Hall was bursting with excitement as fans anticipated an unforgettable night of fun and great music from the sensational duo, and that’s exactly what they got, and more! Although some people might consider them small names, their concert was definitely not just any mere event. There have been so many concerts in Manila so far, but this was definitely one for the books!
8 Reasons Why Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider’s Concert in Manila Was Unforgettable!
1. The fans and fan interactions
One of the best things in a concert is when the artist notices, talks to and relates to their fans. Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider definitely made it a worthwhile concert because aside from their amazing performance, they also made us really feel like we were part of their experience! By throwing out free bracelets (and even a signed shirt) to the crowd and taking picture and videos of them cheering and waving, they really made a great connection with us. Sam even borrowed a fan’s phone and took an adorable selfie-video with it, and he and Kurt pointed out some of their favorite fan signs.
Meanwhile, the fans wouldn’t let a moment go by without trying to get Kurt and Sam’s attention. Everyone was taking pictures and videos, screaming their hearts out and declaring their love for the boys. We could even tell that some people in the audience were jealous when Sam brought out opening act, Rita De Guzman, and did a medley with her for Bring Me the Night. Everyone was so into it! In fact, when Sam performed Pompeii, he could’ve done it without singing cause the audience accompanied him with every line! Really, though, who wouldn’t enjoy a concert where the artists themselves take the effort to reach out to their fans?
2. Fresh songs from their new EP
Being at the concert was actually a great privilege because just a day before it, Sam and Kurt released a brand new EP called Wildfire. This means a number of fans got to hear, Sam and Kurt sing Wildfire and Love and Us for the very first time. Even if we couldn’t sing along to them as well as we did with the other songs, it was impossible to forget that new songs were added to our list of favorite Sam and Kurt originals that night.
3. They performed the favorites
Fans love Sam and Kurt for their covers and mash-ups and just as expected, they performed the ones that were nearest and dearest to our hearts! The recent Let It Go/Let Her Go mash-up in itself had fans screaming along to every line and their Pop Medley 2013 was the perfect way to pump up the audience. Other well-loved YouTube covers such as his Counting Stars/ Timber and Get Lucky/ Treasure were sang just as we remembered (except way better cause they were right in front of us!)
4. Sam and Kurt’s energy
No doubt about it, one of the most memorable things about the concert was Sam’s bursting, contagious energy! He started the show off with a bang as he sang Make It Up, showed a few moves (hello Gangnam Style!) during his Summer Pop Medley 2012 (a mash-up of 13 songs!) and showed how well he could jump across the stage during wherever you are.
Meanwhile, without fail, Kurt was banging on the keyboard with the utmost gusto, swaying his hips and nodding his head! Just watching them move on that stage got us clapping our hands, bopping to the beat and dancing on our seats. Energetic movements aside, his voice also didn’t seem to get tired! He performed very well, hitting his high notes well and really taking advantage of his smooth, suave tone with every song.
5. Performing their YouTube Journey
One of the sweetest most nostalgic moments of the night was when Sam and Kurt took a trip down memory lane so to speak, and performed a medley of their YouTube journey, beginning with the video that started it all: the Michael Jackson medley, which brought us right back to that video with the numerous Sam Tsuis singing the harmonies.
Right after that, he recounted his days of turning dance songs to ballads and sang his unique rendition of Britney Spears’ Hold It Against Me. Lastly, he performed his video with the most likes, his incredible version of Just A Dream. True Sam and Kurt fans really go back to that very first multiple-Sams-singing-all-the-harmonies video, and it was so refreshing seeing him performing these favorites. These classic Sam Tsui and Kurt Schneider songs always remain with us, just like this performance will.
6. Cups
Sam and Kurt performed Cups… with the cups. Perfectly, I must add. Nothing (and really, NOTHING) could be more adorable than that!
7. A genuine performance
They didn’t just have energy, either; they also had all the right emotions. When Sam was singing some of their more mellow songs, you could really see the genuineness in their performances. From his soulful Shadow to his very sweet Worth It, you could really see that he meant every word. It was another combination of the versatility of his voice and the heart he poured out on stage.
8. They love us
Sam and Kurt absolutely love us! You could see how eager and happy they were while performing and they mentioned how much they loved the Philippines and their Filipino fans constantly all throughout the concert. Although it’s usual for foreign artists to memorize some Filipino phrases to say to fans, Sam and Kurt learned “Nag-enjoy ba kayo?”, and “Mahal ko kayo!” and said it over and over again between songs. They also mentioned their guesting on Showtime and explained how excited they were to be on Philippine television.
They really seemed to honestly enjoy themselves here, and to know that from any international artist is enough to make any fan kilig. (By the way, Philippines is the only country in their Asia Tour where they performed for two nights). It’s really a heartwarming feeling as a Filipino and fan to know that they loved being here as much as we loved having them here. And it’s a great thing that they promised they’d come back soon, too, because we definitely cannot wait to have another unforgettable experience with Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider.
