Wheninmanila.com was there to witness 300: Rise of an Empire’s big screen premier thanks to our friends from Solaire Resort and Casino. The block screening of 300: Rise of an Empire was part of Solaire’s first year anniversary celebration. There was a brief pre-movie segment filled with games and giveaways. The hosts were awesome enough to give a handful of lucky viewers that night some prizes that ranged from Solaire notebooks and t-shirts to free concert tickets. [Obligatory spoiler note: While this is a short review of the movie, we ENCOURAGE you to leave this page if you don’t want any movie spoilers. Thanks.]

300: Rise of an Empire Premier ScreeningArtemisia – One Bad Ass Villain

300: Rise of an Empire is a follow-up to the 2007 hit film 300 by Zack Snyder. Compared to the previous film, this one follows a new hero named Themistocles of Athens (played by Sullivan Stapleton), the man who killed Xerxes’ father King Darius I. This movie also gives the viewers a brief history of Xerxes’ transformation from a grieving son to the “God-King” of the Persian Empire. In 300: Rise of an Empire, most of the battle takes place at sea, which is a far cry from the land battles of the previous movie. This film is just as violent and blood-filled as the last one so the fans of the previous movie will totally enjoy seeing the fighting, decapitating and dismemberment scenes in glorious slow motion.

Another highlight of this film comes from Artemisia, played by Eva Green. Green’s portrayal of Artemisia’s bloodlust and vengeful wrath was excellent and for me, it was one of the things that carried this movie. The battle scenes of the movie were spectacular as always. My favorite scene in the movie was the opening battle that featured Themistocles and the Greeks battling the Persians during the start of the film. Other scenes I enjoyed in this movie were Artemisia and Themistocles’ one on one battle during the final battle and the 3-on-1 Spartan street fight. All in all, while I miss Leonidas and his ‘overly manly man’ quotes from the first movie, 300: Rise of an Empire is still an enjoyable film that people should watch. I know I enjoyed it and if you’re into movies filled with action, blood and guts, then this movie is for YOU!
