In recent years, the demand for industrial engineers throughout the country has been rapidly growing; now, it is one of the most sought after courses that students intend to take and companies seek to recruit from.

But what exactly is an industrial engineer? In a nutshell, an IE is someone who systematically creates ways to make anything more efficient and effective in reaching goals. An IE, whose course has a broad curriculum and flexible subject matter, can be assigned to virtually any field, from the manufacturing industry, to the service sector, and even to government projects. Improvement and innovation: these are what define an industrial engineer.

On March 8, 2014, the Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers – National Student Chapter (PIIE-NSC), a consortium of Industrial Engineering student societies from different colleges and universities around the country, in partnership with the UPD Department of Industrial Engineering, UP Industrial Engineering Club (UP IE Club) and UP Circle of Industrial Engineering Majors (UP CIEM), and in cooperation with its media partners Mellow 94/7, WhenInManila.com, Online Philippines and Manila Bulletin, shall hold its 11th National Student Congress and will kick off the first ever National IE Expo at Hall D of the World Trade Center, Pasay City. Over two thousand (2000) students, teachers and professionals from more than fifty (50) schools across the nation will share their knowledge about the industry and will generate innovative ideas to solve current national issues.

The nation-wide event will have five (5) main features: (1) the IE Convention wherein guest speakers will explain the state of Industrial Engineering in the country and will conduct brainstorming activities among the student leaders from various schools, (2) Smart IEdeas where there will be a series of micro-talks to be given by students, faculty and esteemed guests to entrepreneurs and other IE professionals, (3) the Research Fair, where research projects of students from the participating schools will showcase their work and show their results to the attendees, (4) Org Showcase, where student organizations will show off who they are and what they do, in order to create awareness for their organization and for them to branch out to the national IE community, and (5) Career Fair, where students will be able to communicate with the companies and submit their resumés for either an internship program or employment.  Other activities include career seminars, congress talks, on-site job interviews, research competition and an IE quiz.

The registration fees for the event are as follows: Affiliated schools will have a fee of PhP 500 for one day and PhP 950 for two days. Unaffiliated schools will have a fee of PhP 600 for one day and PhP 1100 for two days.
