In an interview with Vanity Fair, he said he was in Manila that year to shoot his film Platoon. He said, “I arrived in the Philippines and my plane was the last plane in because there was a revolution. ‘Sit tight, the movie’s canceled, we’ll get you out when we can.’ So for about three or four days, me and a couple of other people that were there ahead of time were out on the streets with the people and it was an incredible feeling because it was a revolution that happened for the most part without violence.”
In the end, the producers got the movie back on track and were able to film it.
Platoon is directed by Oliver Stone and is the first of a trilogy exploring the Vietnam War. It starred Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Forest Whitaker, and Johnny Depp. The film was a critical and box office success, receiving eight Oscar nominations and winning Best Picture, Director, Sound, and Film Editing. It was followed by Born on the Fourth of July and Heaven & Earth.
