The teaser for the next film in the DC Extended Universe might not show much plot-wise, but it does hype up a new set of characters. The Birds of Prey is an all-female superhero team based in Gotham. The comics featured a constantly rotating cast of characters but were generally centered on the trio of Batgirl/Oracle, Black Canary, and Huntress.
Based on the teaser it doesn’t seem as if Barbara Gordon will be there to lead the group. Perhaps this missing spot will be filled in by Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn instead? We can’t really say for sure since the 19-second teaser does little other than introduce the characters — and even that was done quite vaguely.
So let’s slow it down and dissect the teaser frame per frame to at least see which characters will be appearing on our screens. Other than Harley Quinn, we caught 4 kickass women featured in the teaser.
The first seems to be Renee Montoya. While we can’t confirm anything from the silhouette, past reports from the movie’s director have confirmed Rosie Perez to be playing the role of the slightly alcoholic Gotham cop.
Next is Huntress, also known as Helena Bertillini. Taking on the role of the vengeance filled vigilante is Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be playing Black Canary. It’s unsure if this portrayal of the heroine will depict her as a meta-human with her canary cry or have her rely on martial arts skills.
While the movie might not have Barbara Gordon, it might still get a Batgirl in the form of Cassandra Cain. Played by Ella Jay Basco, it’s rumored that her character will be hunted by Black Mask in the movie.
Which, of course, leads us to Black Mask himself. This Gotham crime lord will be played by Ewan McGregor and looks to be the main opponent to the Birds of Prey.
Another expected villain is Chris Messina’s Victor Zsasz. Known as a serial killer and assassin, a team up with Black Mask will certainly be interesting.
