Valkyrie to be the MCU’s First Openly LGBTQ+ Hero

The Marvel panel at the San Diego Comic-Con revealed a lot of things about the future of the franchise. Aside from the general announcements of movies and series, the actors and directors on the panel gave us a bit of a taste of what’s to come in each project. One of the biggest reveals during the panel was from the Thor crew. Officially titled Thor: Love and Thunder, the new installment is going to pick up from where Thor’s story left off in Avengers: Endgame.

As you might remember, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie officially became the new King of Asgard. During the panel, Tessa teased that since Valkyrie is going to be king, she’s going to be needing a queen! This drove not only Hall H audiences wild, but fans tuning into the event through the internet as well.

This means that Valkyrie is officially the first openly LGBTQ+ hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, Valkyrie identifies as bisexual and it’s good to see that represented on screen as well. Chris Hemsworth revealed during the panel that he and his fellow cast members haven’t gotten to read the script of the new film as well, but it’s definitely one to watch out for!

Taika Waititi is returning to direct the film with Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Natalie Portman reprising their roles as Thor, Valkyrie, and Jane Foster respectively.
