YouTuber Eugene Lee Yang of The Try Guys had previously publicly identified as a member of the LGBT but was never quite explicit about his sexual orientation. He has only just come out as “a proud gay man” in lieu of Pride Month. Eugene told his story through a personal video, “I’m Gay.”
The short film was written, directed, and choreographed by Eugene and told through the music of Odesza. It is a narrative that chronicles Eugene’s own struggles and searches for self-acceptance, highlighting facets such as a conservative environment and the reality of hate crime. This tribute for the LGBTQIA+ community also featured RuPaul’s Drag Race queens Kim Chi and Mayhem Miller.
Eugene announced on his Twitter account: “I created this music video as my personal way of coming out as a proud gay man who has many unheard, specific stories to tell. I withheld because of fear and shame shaped by my background but I promise to give my full truth in the rest of my life’s work.”
