Top 10 ALS Ice Bucket Challenges

When in Manila, or anywhere else in the world, surely your recent Facebook newsfeed has been filled with videos of people pouring a bucket of icewater over their heads. If you still don’t know what the madness is about, get to know the #icebucketchallenge: the challenge calls for people to dump icewater above their heads, then nominate 3 friends to do the same. Is the task completed within 24 hours of being called out, you get to nominate other friends. Otherwise, you are asked to donate $100.

While this trend may seem silly to you, rest assured that it is done for a good cause: to raise awareness and money for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) – also known as the Lou Gehrig’s disease – a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain. A testament to the power of social media, the challenge has already raised more than $5.5 million since July 29.*
