Google’s Doodle for the Tokyo Olympics Is a Full RPG Game, and We Can’t Stop Playing It

Google just commemorated the beginning of the much-awaited Tokyo 2020 Olympics with its unique Google Doodle that will truly beat your lockdown boredom.

Google’s Tokyo Olympics Doodle is actually a full Japanese RPG-style adventure packed with tons of mini-games inspired by the official Olympics sports. It was created by Tokyo-based Studio 4°C, an award-winning animation studio behind beloved anime films like “Tekkonkinkreet” and the action-adventure horror game “Catherine.”

“We’re pleased that we were able to allude to various stories from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south in the Doodle,” the studio’s developers said about the collaboration. “Besides drawing inspiration from stories known across Japan, we also hoped to convey the rich and diverse natural beauty of the country, including underwater, sandy tropical beaches, forests, and snowy mountains.”

In the Google Doodle Game, you play as Lucky the Ninja Cat who travels to Champion Island and faces different foes who are all inhabitants of the island. Some of the characters you’ll meet are a Komainu (statues of lion dogs that can be found guarding the entrances to shrines and temples in Japan) while playing Table Tennis, a Tanuki (raccoon dog) in the Skateboarding competition, and an Oni (Japanese demon) while playing Rugby. Successfully beating them will earn you their scrolls!

With adorable pixel graphics and fun game mechanics, it’s almost impossible not to be addicted to playing it for hours on end. Play it here.
