This Korean Comfort Food Spot at Shangri-La Plaza Has Closed Its Doors

For years, 70’s Kimchi held a steady spot in Shangri-La Plaza’s food court—an easy choice for those looking for familiar Korean dishes at reasonable prices. After 24 years in the same location, the stall has closed, with April 30, 2026, marking its final day.

Owner Bry Abengoza shared the news on social media. Maintaining a physical space while keeping prices accessible and food quality consistent had become increasingly difficult.

“Costs have made mall retail unsustainable if we want to keep 70’s Kimchi affordable and true to quality,” she said.

The brand’s history goes back to 1973, when it first operated as Kimchi under founder Bernard Kim. Its next chapter took shape through Erlinda Ramirez, Abengoza’s mother, who started as a cashier and later became part of the business.

In 2002, as Ramirez prepared to leave, the Shangri-La branch was turned over to her through a handwritten note. She continued operations under a new name, eventually building what customers came to know as 70’s Kimchi.

Regulars kept coming back over the years, and the stall became a familiar stop within the mall. In the days leading up to its closure, customers shared messages online about their experiences—some recalling visits dating back decades, others noting that it had been part of their usual food court routine.

The business, however, is not shutting down entirely.

“We’re shifting to Frozen Faves so you can still stock your fridge anytime. And we’re hunting for a new Mandaluyong kitchen,” Abengoza said.

She also addressed both her team and longtime customers, thanking the staff for their years of commitment and expressing hope that they would move into the next chapter together.

“To this crew: salamat sa pagmamahal nyo sa business at sa ating mga customers. Sa next chapter, sama-sama pa rin tayo. To our customers: come see the team before we close. Otherwise, see you in your kitchens.”
