The traditional dress in Korea is called the hanbok, an elaborate set of clothes in vibrant colors and designs. While many of us know Koreans as leaders in modern style, locals in Seoul still revere the hanbok and wear it during traditional festivals and celebrations. Apart from that, they also wear the hanbok when they visit any of the royal palaces in Seoul since they can get in for free if they wear it.
During my visit to Seoul last November, I fell in love with the different hanbok my friends and I saw while touring the Gyeongbokgung Palace, the biggest of the Five Grand Palaces of the Joseon dynasty, Korea’s last dynasty that ruled for five centuries. The women wore it in different colors, in different styles, and paired with different shoes, bags, and hairpieces. It was like stepping back in time!
