The Lord of the Rings Series Episode Count Was Possibly Just Revealed To Us

Fans of the epic fantasy have been scrambling for any news on the planned Lord of the Rings series ever since it was announced last year. Details have been kept mum but we do finally know the first actor to be cast in the show, as well as the impressive creative team behind the series. And now, it looks like they might just have given us the first season’s episode count.

Believed to be arriving sometime in 2021, the Tolkien series will reportedly be having a 20-episode season. Tom Shippey, who is a member of the creative team, let it slip in an interview discussing the show’s logistics. When speaking to Deutsche Tolkien he first talked about rumored filming locations:

The exact locations are of course uncertain and it could well be several. The shooting itself does not take place chronologically, but is oriented towards the locations.

Logically, you try to bundle all the scenes that take place in one location and film them so that you have it done and don’t have to return to that place several times. But this also implies that everything has to be clear at the start of filming, you have to know the end.

There’s supposed to be 20 episodes for the first season. So, until they’ve decided what the end is going to be, they can’t start filming.

An episode count may not seem like a big deal but its great news for fans who were afraid that too much story would be crammed into a shorter season length. It also tells us that the showrunners possibly have something grand in store for us.
