President Duterte to donate one-month salary for COVID-19 fight

President Rodrigo Duterte will donate hid one-month salary in a bid to combat COVID-19 in the country, the Palace announced on Sunday.

This comes after cabinet members announced that they will take 75% monthly pay cuts and about 200 members of the House of Representatives will donate an entire month of their salaries to provide help to our country as we fight the spread of the new coronavirus.

“Others have volunteered a salary deduction for the whole duration of the state of public health emergency in solidarity with our countrymen and to help in the government efforts to halt the spread of the coronavirus,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement. “The President is likewise donating his one month salary for the cause.”

Under RA No. 6758, the president’s salary is at Salary Grade 33, which is P395,858 per month.

Panelo added that the assistant secretaries of the Office of the Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson have also volunteered to donate at least 10 percent of their April income. They also pledged parts of their salaries in the succeeding months to support groups at the front line of the crisis.

President Duterte implemented a Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine on March 17, 2020. It is expected to end on April 12, 2020, although the government is still deciding whether to extend it or to lift it already.
