Legendary film director Peque Gallaga passed away today due to pneumonia, according to his brother Ricky Gallaga and his manager June Rufino. He was 76.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Gallaga was hospitalized because of his past health conditions.

Based on a statement from his family shared by his fellow director Lore Reyes, “The family of Peque Gallaga would like to make this statement in regard to the news and [rumors] circulating about him. Peque Gallaga is in the hospital due to complications arising from past health conditions.”

After his passing was announced, the family released another statement, saying, “He was a visionary and artist; a loving husband, father, and grandfather; and a dear friend. He has brought so much joy to so many people and he will always live in our memories and in his art.”

It added, “There will be no service as we will observe safety precautions during these times. We are grateful for your thoughts, well-wishes, and prayers but we would appreciate some time to grieve as a family in private during this very painful time.”

Gallaga will be cremated, as per his and the family’s wish.

Gallaga is known for a wide body of work that includes films considered as classics. He directed Scorpio Nights, Tiyanak, Magic Temple, select segments of Shake, Rattle & Roll, and Oro, Plata, Mata.
