From Hotel Linens to Handcrafted Accessories: Park Inn Davao Debuts Threaded Tales for Kadayawan

Park Inn by Radisson Davao opened this year’s Kadayawan with more than just a celebration. It launched Threaded Tales, a sustainability project that brings together design, advocacy, and community empowerment under SM Hotels and Conventions Corp’s (SMHCC) sustainability program, Tela Tales.

Threaded Tales is a collaborative line of accessories made from discarded hotel linens, transformed into handcrafted pieces by Davao’s local artisan communities. The launch featured a runway-style presentation held in the hotel lobby, showcasing vanity kits, tote bags, and hats, all upcycled and locally made.

A Collaboration Rooted in Local Creativity

The designs were created in partnership with Repamana’s Dars Juson, whose creative direction helped turn discarded fabric into wearable, minimalist fashion. Production was done through the Talomo Women’s Community and the collective Think-Outside-Trash, both of which are committed to upcycling and community-based livelihood.

According to Leah Magallanes, SMHCC’s Vice President for Quality and Sustainability, the project reflects the corporation’s commitment to social impact and sustainability across its properties.

“Wherever we operate, we create shared prosperity,” she said during the launch event.

Threaded Tales aims to do exactly that. In addition to promoting textile waste reduction in hospitality, the project helps create income opportunities for local women. A portion of all sales—15% of proceeds—will be donated to G. Astilla Cultural Minority High School in Marilog, supporting students in one of Davao’s underserved communities.

What’s in the Collection

Threaded Tales: Weaving Sustainability into Kadayawan

The collection includes:

  • Vanity kits made for travel or everyday use

  • Hats that blend utility and local flair

  • Bags constructed from repurposed fabric, designed to last

Each item is a result of circular design thinking: reducing waste, extending material life cycles, and enabling community partnerships through fashion.

Tela Tales: The Bigger Picture

Threaded Tales isn’t just a one-off campaign. It’s part of Tela Tales, a wider sustainability initiative by SMHCC that spans multiple properties across the country. Tela Tales was first introduced to reimagine how hotels deal with textile waste, particularly discarded linens that can no longer be used for guest services.

Instead of sending them to landfills, these materials are upcycled into useful products, often through collaborations with artists, social enterprises, and women-led communities. Each participating hotel under SMHCC is encouraged to localize the initiative, creating items that reflect regional identity while staying true to the core values of reuse and community impact.

Through Tela Tales, SMHCC supports skill-building, income generation, and sustainable entrepreneurship. It proves that hotel sustainability can go beyond operations and into meaningful, long-term social initiatives.

A Cultural Statement for Kadayawan

By launching Threaded Tales during Kadayawan, Park Inn by Radisson Davao anchors its sustainability advocacy in the middle of one of the city’s most celebrated cultural festivals. The project reflects the spirit of the season: gratitude, community, and local pride, while creating real, measurable impact.

For those visiting Davao or attending Kadayawan events, Threaded Tales offers a purposeful way to engage with the local culture. The items are available for purchase at Park Inn by Radisson Davao, with proceeds directly supporting the artisan community and students in need.

A New Kind of Souvenir

Threaded Tales isn’t just about fashion. It’s about what’s possible when sustainability and social design intersect. For anyone looking to take home more than just photos from this year’s Kadayawan, this collection offers a lasting reminder that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible.

In a season that celebrates heritage, creativity, and connection, Threaded Tales stands out, not just for what it looks like, but for what it represents.
