OFW Mary Jane Veloso Spared from Next Round of Execution in Indonesia

Protest for Mary Jane Veloso

Mary Jane Veloso, an OFW in Indonesia, was given last minute reprieve last year, when an employment recruiter, whom she had accused of planting drugs in her luggage, gave herself up to police in the Philippines.

Veloso is convicted in Indonesia for drug smuggling and sentenced to death. It was confirmed from a post on CNN Philippines that she will not be part of the next round of execution.

Veloso will not be included according to Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo, “We are still waiting on the legal process in the Philippines, which we have to respect.”

However, 16 prisoners will be executed this year. The specific time frame was not identified.

Indonesia has declared a “drug emergency” and vowed no mercy for drug traffickers.

Death penalty is implemented in Indonesia through firing squad.
