I think we’re all pretty familiar with the (in)famous dance routine Ross and Monica debuted in the sixth season of Friends.ย You know the one, it has them combining all the trendy dance moves of that time into a horrifyingly fascinating dance number. Well, it turns out that iconic piece of pop culture was created by none other than the Pussycat Dolls Founder herself, Robin Antin.
Apparently, theย Friendsย producers contacted Antin for “a dance that Monica and Ross were going to doโฆon New Yearโs Rockinโ Eve.” As we know, the crazy routine was used by the two as an attempt to get on camera during Dick Clarkโs New Yearโs Rockinโ Eve. Antin explained that they asked for it to be “extremely sillyโฆ. Their description for me was silly, fun, trying way too hard, over the top, really dancing, just thinking that theyโre the best ever.โ
Vanity Fair describes the dance as an “unholy explosion of human movement” and honestly… that’s fair. After all, what Antin did was combine the cheesiest dance moves of the era into an intentionally jumbled up mess. And she was impressed by how well Courtney Cox and David Schwimmer were able to pull it off.
โEvery single move I showed them, they were able to do it,โ Antin said. โI swear to God. I was like, Oh, my God, how can you know how to do this?โ And it turns out, some of the moves were improvised by Cox and Schwimmer themselves! No wonder the routine is such a good representation of Ross and Monica both.
