In a Facebook post, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said this move comes after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to lighten the burden on commuters amid rising fuel costs due to the conflict in the Middle East.

On the MRT and LRT, we will provide discounted fares. We will do everything to ensure that every Filipino’s journey remains smooth and uninterrupted),” Marcos Jr. said.

The government is doing everything to ease the hardships of Filipinos amid the unrest in the Middle East. Our priority is continuous travel and more affordable fares, which is why we will give a 50% discount on MRT-3 and LRT-2 for everyone).”

The 50% discount for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and students with white beep cards will remain in effect.

Meanwhile, regular commuters can automatically enjoy the 50% discount with their blue beep cards. Those without beep cards can still purchase single-journey tickets at the same discounted rate.

As of writing, the DOTr is coordinating with the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (Metro Manila) management to extend the same discount to their line. It is noted that the LRT-1 is operated by a private company.
