Lin-Manuel Miranda Reveals What Surprised Him While Directing His First Movie

Award-winning songwriter, playwright, and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda just had another achievement under his belt. Netflixโ€™s upcoming original film, tick, tickโ€ฆ BOOM! is officially Mirandaโ€™s feature film directorial debut.

Miranda has won awards for writing the Broadway musicals In The Heights and Hamilton and writing songs for Disneyโ€™s Moana. While he has also had experiences with acting for the theater, for TV, and for movies, this is the first time that he has taken on the role of director for a full-length feature film. Surprising, I know!

Though he has enough experience and accolades for a few lifetimes, itโ€™s good to know that he still enjoys surprises with first-time experiences.

In a media interview for tick, tickโ€ฆ BOOM!, Miranda shared that the huge and surprising difference between directing for the theater and directing for film is the editing process.

โ€œI couldnโ€™t believe how much I enjoyed it,โ€ Miranda said, noting how much it was just like writing a musical score.

โ€œItโ€™s the same principles at work. Itโ€™s tension and release, and when to sit in a moment and stay in it, and when to speed through to the next thing. Itโ€™s rising and falling and finding the internal rhythms in an arc of an evening. Thatโ€™s exactly the same thing that Iโ€™m doing when Iโ€™m sitting at a piano, crafting a score.โ€

For Mirandaโ€™s first time directing a full-length feature, he definitely knows exactly how to tug at his audienceโ€™s heartstrings, leaving many of us sobbing and weeping throughout the whole film. You would have to see it for yourself! Fair warning: prepare to cry your heart out especially if you’re a certified musical theater fan and an artist at heart.

You can catch tick, tickโ€ฆ BOOM! on Netflix this November 19, 2021. It is an adaptation of the autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, who revolutionized theater as the creator of Rent.
