A couple of fans have become the subject of criticism online after they posted a video of themselves inside Broadway star Lea Salonga’s dressing room after her performance on “Here Lies Love” insisting on taking a picture with her.
“Can we take pictures with you?” a Filipino fan had asked her upon entering Lea’s dressing room. Lea asked who they were and, after realizing that they were fans, told them that they shouldn’t come inside her dressing room unprompted if they were not on the guest list. “You’ll have to go to the door,” she insisted, visibly upset.
“I’m sorry ’cause if I allow this now, then other people are gonna take advantage,” she added.
The fan then said that they were friends of one of the co-producers of the musical but still Lea told them to wait at the door outside. When the fans wouldn’t leave, Lea decided to accompany them outside while telling them off about invasion of privacy.
“Please don’t do this again,” Lea told them while shaking her head, even as the fan kept complimenting her. “We’re strict about this.”
Eventually, she did take a picture with the fans. They then posted the video on Facebook and shared their side of the story. “If ever po na mali kami at wala sa guest list, the fact na andun na kami para lang magpapicture… pumila at nagbayad ng mahal para sa show, siguro naman po bilang kapwa Pilipino at mga fans eh mabigyan ng kahit konting respeto at kahit hindi na yakapin or i-beso ay mapagbigyan na kahit sandaling magpa-picture (mabilis lang naman yun),” the fan wrote.
The video went viral online with many pointing out the lack of security in the backstage area and that what the two people did was “beyond entitled and rude.”
“Lea Salonga was not wrong to insist on respecting her personal space in this instance. These “fans” are beyond entitled and rude. But my key takeaway here is there’s no one managing or securing their backstage area?” said writer and producer Erwin Aurella in a tweet.
Lea replied to him saying that the co-producer who the fans said they were friends with didn’t even know who they were. “I checked in with G after this happened….. she had no idea who they were,” she shared.
