Kris Aquino Gives Update on Health Status: “Time Is Now My Enemy”

Kris Aquino has taken to her Instagram account to clarify what’s really going on with the state of her health at the moment.

Kris, who has previously announced that she will be flying to Houston, Texas to be treated for her “life-threatening” disease, shared through a statement written by her attending physician, Dr. Niño Gavino, that she has been diagnosed with eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). EGPA is reported to be “a rare disease that happens when certain types of cells in your blood or tissues inflame … [which] can affect many organs, including your heart and kidneys.”

Dr. Gavino stated that they had given Kris a steroid drug challenge last May 6, 2022, for her “fast-progressing EGPA” but she had a “severe adverse reaction” to it that “almost incapacitated her body.” Doctors also weren’t able to alleviate her symptoms following the drug challenge because of her allergies to a lot of medications. It’s because of all this that they decided to advise Kris to undergo treatment with Nucala, a non-steroid, FDA-approved treatment for EGPA that’s only available in the US. They also plan to do other tests on her.

“The subsequent 9 to 12 months will be crucial for us to see if she can achieve remission and continue the regimen further because to survive, Ms. Aquino will have to make whichever combination works, her lifetime maintenance medicine,” Dr. Gavino said. He stressed how difficult and rare Kris’ case with the illness is, noting that only one in one million people is diagnosed with EGPA every year and that the life expectancy rate without medical intervention is 25%. Meanwhile, a five-year survival rate is at 62%.

Kris will only be able to know if the treatments worked and that her condition will be in remission in at least 18 to 24 months.

Writing to her fans and friends, Kris thanked everyone for their prayers and support through this difficult experience. “Maraming salamat po sa lahat ng nagdasal for my recovery,” she said. “I’ll miss you – my friends & followers very much. Time is now my enemy, naghahabol kami hoping na wala pang permanent damage to the blood vessels leading to my heart.”

“So many people to thank but I choose to do that privately,” she added. “For now and the next few years- sadly, it’s goodbye. Praying na kayanin ng katawan ko itong matinding pagsubok.
