Part of the fun of exploring Intramuros is walking the cobblestone streets and seeing its historical sights. It can be difficult, however, when some roads can be narrow and cars are driving around.
Intramuros Administration is solving that by making a popular street in the Walled City more pedestrian- and bike-friendly.
On social media, the agency wrote, “General Luna St. will be closed every Sunday as part of our ongoing efforts to prioritize pedestrianization and promote active transport through our bike lane project.”

It added, “We apologize for any inconvenience caused and kindly request your understanding during this period.”
The move is effective July 16, 2023.
General Luna is named after Antonio Luna, the leader of the Philippine Revolutionary Army. It passes many of Intramuros’s important attractions, including the Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, the Palacio del Gobernador, and Casa Manila.
The street is also the former site of De La Salle University (formerly known as De La Salle College) before it moved to Taft Avenue in the 1920s. Another educational institution is currently situated on the street: the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila stands on the corner of General Luna and Muralla Streets.
Pedestrian and bike-friendly
The move to make General Luna Street more pedestrian- and bike-friendly has been planned for a while.
In 2021, the Intramuros Administration gave Filipinos the chance to share their thoughts on making the street more pedestrian- and bike-friendly.
The agency wrote, “Intramuros is considering assigning certain roads as pedestrian-only streets to improve mobility in the city.”
They also said, “Pedestrian-only streets are streets or roads where motor vehicles are not allowed to enter or pass through. In these streets, only walking, cycling, light electric vehicles and pedicabs are allowed. Motor vehicle traffic is not permitted unless it is an emergency vehicle.”
