There are just people who won’t let dreams remain dreams. They will do whatever it takes to climb to the top. Determination is the strongest motivator for one to progress and be one step closer to that goal – and you’ll be surprised with how far you’ll go when you keep on hustling and pushing yourself. This is the trait thatย Chriszel Singco Vicente, from General Santos City, saw in 11-year-old Kervy James Villarejo.
Inspired by the child’s driven character and optimism, Vicente took it to her Facebook account how she was touched by Villarejo’s story.
“Siya po ay si Kervy James Villarejo, mag-aaral ng Jose Catolico Sr. Elementary School. Grade 5 student.
Sagot niya: “PILOT PO”God Bless your Future Pilot Kervy!! Maka amaze bataa. ย Keep it up Kervy!
Thank you Sir Kim, Kath, Ray, Van, Sherry, BM Ma’am Jean Loquinte.
Hindi na po namin siya pinalinis. Hehe! Kinausap nalang namin.
ย #BatangmayLaban)”
Rough translation:
He is Kervy James Villarejo, a student of Jose Catolico Sr. Elementary School, Grade 5 student. He knocked on our office door, asking if we needed to avail cleaning services (mopping, sweeping, or anything that involved cleaning). The money he will gather will be used to buy project materials for school. I asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, and he said “a pilot, po”. God bless your future, Pilot Kervy! You are an amazing kid. Keep it up Kervy!

We did not ask him to clean. Hehe! We just spoke to him. He’ll come back to show us his final project.
I too am a single mom. I do everything I can to provide my child’s needs. It’s painful knowing that this is what Kervy is currently experiencing, but we are very proud of him.ย
WHEN IN MANILAย has reached out to Vicente for further details.
On the day they encountered Villarejo at the office, Vicente recalled that at around Friday at 2:41 pm, he knocked on the office door and pressed the auto lock button to let him in. He would not enter unless they told him to, and eagerly opened the door a bit and asked if they needed to avail cleaning services. They were puzzled with what the young boy said, to which he suggested that he could mop, sweep or anything else he was requested to do.
“Na curious kaming lahat, pinapasok namin. Nasa booth ako noon, lumabas ako para kausapin siya. Sa totoo lang, naawa ako, kasi sa office may suki na talaga ako na lumalapit at binibigyan ko every month. Itong si Kervy, iba. Nag offer ng service .. napahanga niya talaga kaming lahat, tapos pag interview namin sa kanya ang hirap pala ng current situation nya.”
(We were all curious, so we let him in. I was at my booth, I went outside of it to speak to him. Honestly, I felt sorry for him. Because at the office, I am used to people approaching and asking me for help. With Kervy, it’s different. He offered [cleaning] services. We were astounded by him, even when we interviewed him, it was then we realized that he was going through a hard situation.”)
Vicente told us that he lives with his grandma Jimenez and has three other siblings from different fathers. His father passed away already, while his mother is now with his stepfather with no means of supporting the child.
“11 years old si Kervy ngayon, ka edad ko lang yung mama nya nung pinanganak siya. Same age nung pinanganak ko anak ko at 21. Personally, masakit talaga saakin bakit ganun ang sitwasyon niya. As a single mom, masakit talaga. Kawawa siย Kervy. Pero ang swerte [ng pamilya nya] sa kanya. [Si Kervy] ay masipag, may pangarap.”
(Kervy is now 11 years old, his mother and I were of the same age when she gave birth to him. We were both 21. Personally, it hurts me why his situation’s like that. As a single mom, it’s painful. I feel sorry for Kervy. But his family is lucky, Kervy is hardworking and has a dream.)
Vicente mentions that she sees Villarejo’s potential, andย hopefully people could reach out for help. She also says that Villarejo is the eldest of three siblings, and she’s very proud of him.
Ever since Villarejo’s encounter at Vicente’s office, she has then been treating him like her own child. She also uploaded on her Facebook account that one instance when she took him to a fastfood restaurant and regarded that moment as Kervy’s first time.
