Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands make too much sebum – the greasy substance that protects and hydrates the skin. Even though sebum keeps the skin healthy, too much of it can lead to clogged pores and acne. Stress, heat, and hormonal imbalances are the causes of oiliness in your face. In order to take care of your oily skin, here are what you need to know!
Use gentle soap.
Soaps with fragrances, added moisturizers, or harsh chemicals can irritate or dry out the skin. When that happens, it responds by creating more sebum, so make sure to only wash your face with gentle soap.
Wash with warm water.
Contrary to popular belief, hot water cannot open pores because, unlike muscles, they do not voluntarily open and contract. However, using hot water helps unclog them as the heat helps melt away stuck oils and wash them away.
Do not scrub your face.
You might also want to avoid using facial scrubs as added friction may stimulate the skin to make more oil and we all know you have had enough of that.
Regularly use a toner.
Aside from removing impurities stuck in your pores, toners also tighten them up with regular use. This reduces the chances of contaminants penetrating your skin. Remember that excess oil, clogged pores, and bacteria are the main causes of acne – all of which using a toner can fix.
Leave your pimples alone.
Since you are more prone to acne, here are three things that I would like to emphasize: first, when you touch pimples, you introduce new bacteria to them; second, when you poke them, you force the bacteria even deeper into your skin; and third, when you pop them, you spread the bacteria inside other pores which leads to more pimples.
Apply a facial mask once a week.
A deep-cleansing clay mask soaks up excess oil. Its effect also lasts for several days by reducing sebum levels without irritating your skin. This is why you should only use it occasionally, to prevent your skin from drying out.
Moisturize.
Since you do not want to overly dry out your skin, you still need to moisturize after all of these steps. Although, you might want to use gels or silicon-based moisturizers that are mattifying because you do not need that extra shine.
