HOLD THE DOOR: HBO is Developing Four Spinoffs to “Game of Thrones”

Only 13 Episodes Left of "Game of Thrones", Says Show Creators

HBO’s Game of Thrones is about to start its seventh season this July, which means that the eighth and final season will be out soon. If you’re a fan who’s wondering where to go once the inevitable series finale airs, fret not: HBO is developing four spinoffs to the highly-acclaimed series.

There’s no word what the shows will be about, but it will “explore different time periods of George R. R. Martin’s vast and rich universe.”

The four spinoffs will be developed by different groups of people, with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss playing executive producers in all four shows. A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin is involved in two projects.

The move may be considered unusual, as the network has never created a spinoff or a follow-up of its shows. But it’s understandable when you consider the show’s success: Game of Thrones is HBO’s most-watched and longest-running series, and has received 38 Primetime Emmy Awards, the most for any TV series.

Of course, it’s also possible that not all four will be greenlit for production. HBO added, “There is no set timetable for these projects. We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.”

Game of Thrones is an adaptation of Martin’s fantasy series of novels and follows different dynasties as they aim to succeed the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.
