Here are Some Easy Tips to Make Sure You’re Healthy During the Quarantine

Home Workout

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with my health and weight. Sure, I’m aware of how important it is to stay healthy, but it’s the implementation that’s always difficult. It’s hard to give up junk food (why do they taste so good?) and commit to a workout. Somehow, it’s just easier to just eat what’s available and spend our free time resting or pursuing our passions. But then COVID-19 happened.

This health pandemic has highlighted the importance of taking care of yourself. While the best way to protect yourself from the virus is through frequent handwashing and to practice social distancing, I also believe in keeping yourself healthy. It’s important to watch what you eat and to stay active since we’re mostly sedentary while working from home. More importantly, following an unhealthy lifestyle makes you prone to being sick. Now is not the right time to get sick, even with just the simple flu. With anxiety running loose, I will definitely panic if I develop a cough or a fever now.

So how do we do it? We can get on the road to a healthy lifestyle by starting an exercise routine and adjusting our diet. The internet has tons of easy workouts that we can do at home. If you’re a beginner, you can pick up a yoga practice or do simple HIIT workouts. Find a routine that you like and stick to it. Here are simple cardio exercises to help you get started.

As for your diet, I find that it is easier to add healthy food than subtract guilty pleasures. I introduce more fruits, vegetables, and other healthy dishes to my diet instead of cutting out my favorite treats. That way, I can still indulge while getting the nutrients that I need. And oh, portion control is important!

Sun Life 2

Just last month, Sun Life held the GoWell Holistic Wellness Challenge, a one-month initiative to encourage participants to practice a healthy lifestyle. The challenge incorporates mental, physical, financial, and social wellness for a holistic approach. Me and my teammate joined a GoWell program in 2018 that focused on healthy eating and joining workout classes, such as spinning, NT Sweat, and a mystery workout. I credit GoWell for kickstarting my wellness journey (I lost 20lbs because of the things I learned from GoWell).

Aleah Orendain, who won this year’s challenge, has been a member of GoWell for three years. According to her, “I am still a beginner when it comes to being fit and healthy but thanks to GoWell’s articles on the website, and events and challenges, I am on my way to being fit and healthy.”

Jenny Andres, who won the second week’s challenge, shared her favorite experience. She said, “my favorite one is about being generous to a delivery service [rider]. I surely will keep the lessons the recent challenges have taught me and strive to progress without leaving anything behind.”
