Described by the Grammy Awards as R&B’s ‘rising star’, H.E.R. was nominated for a total of 5 Grammy’s. She was able to snag 2 of the titles: Best R&B Album for her self-titled album H.E.R and Best R&B Performance for “Best Part”. She was also nominated in the categories of Album of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best R&B song.
‘H.E.R.’ is actually an acronym for ‘Having Everything Revealed’ and functions as the singer’s stage name. When she’s not performing, she’s better known as Gabriella Wilson. You might remember her as a 10-year-old on the Today Show, surprising everyone with her rendition of Alicia Key’s If I Ain’t Got You.
She later built her fame by being part of Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing at 12, then signing with RCA Records at 14. She took on the H.E.R. persona in 2016. Since then she’s released the EPs H.E.R. Volume 2 (2017), H.E.R. Volume 2, The B Sides (2017), I Used To Know Her: The Prelude (2018) and I Used To Know Her: Part 2 (2018). Her compilation album, H.E.R. was released in October 2017 and subsequently earned her the Grammy recognition.
She’s explained that she prefers using H.E.R. so that people can focus on her music rather than who she is. But it doesn’t necessarily mean she wants to keep her identity a secret. Wilson has maintained that she is proud of her heritage, with a Filipino mother and an African American father.
In an interview with James Corden, she’s shared that it is actually her Filipino background which led to her love of music. She said: “I’m half Filipino and Filipinos love karaoke. So yeah, I love to sing, I’ve always been around music my entire life and I just gravitated towards instruments.”
