Finding the Good Ol’ Philly Cheese Steak at The Cheese Steak Shop

Their best-seller, the Classic Philly Cheese Steak, comes in either steak or chicken sandwiched between the famous bread from Philadelphia-based bakery, Amoroso’s. Mai pointed out that they particularly import the bread from the US because it is one of the key ingredients in making that true Philly cheese steak. She also shared how foreigners would always comment “feels like home” whenever they have a taste of the sandwich offered by The Cheese Steak Shop here in the Philippines! Most of the ingredients of the cheese steak sandwiches, such as the bread, meat, and cheese, are imported from US, while their fresh vegetables are sourced from the local market.

The Classic Philly Cheese Steak can be ordered in different sizes (depending on your hunger level, of course!) such as 7, 10, and 15 inches. The 15-inch cheese steak sandwich is good for 3 to 4 people but if you have an enormous hunger, this might not be enough for the group! Our 15-inch Classic Philly Cheese Steak came with the dip called au jus, which is French for “with its own juice”. The French dip enhances the taste of meat and in our case, the chicken in our sandwich. Aside from the dip, the sandwich also had sidings of hot and sweet peppers, perfect to enhance the taste of the sandwich.

What’s not captured: The grubby fingers ready to grab a bite off the sandwich!

Aside from the meat (steak or chicken) and Amoroso’s bread, Mai also explained that another essential ingredient in the cheese steak sandwich is (drum roll, please) THE CHEESE! The Cheese Steak Shop uses 3 kinds of cheese, namely, Provolone, white American cheese, and cheese sauce. You can ask the crew to change the cheese used in your sandwich according to your taste. The Italian-made Provolone is the tastiest of the 3 cheeses, with cheese sauce coming in at second. If you want to taste “more” of the meat, you can add the white American cheese because it’s the blandest among the choices.

If you’re looking for a heavy breakfast, try the 10-inch Classic Breakfast Cheese Steak, which is the Classic Cheese Steak but with egg on top of the sandwich. Perfect to jumpstart your action-packed day!

Two eggs atop the sandwich means: Good Morning! Either that or it simply means you ordered the 10-inch sandwich.

For those looking for healthier alternatives in the menu, you can go for the Vegetarian or the Zesty Veggie Sandwich. But if you don’t want to miss your meat serving, check out the Spinach Premium Cheese Steak that has chopped spinach and mushrooms. Order this sandwich with steak and white American cheese because these go well with the spinach and mushrooms. The spinach did not turn me into Popeye but it did make me hum, “I’m Popeye the sailor maaaaaan!” while munching on this tasty sandwich. Did I mention that the chili peppers on top offset the “umay” in this cheese steak, similar to pickles?

Even the most carnivorous eater won’t be able to taste the spinach in this cheese steak!
