Fatwave Surf Resort, La Union: Beach Paradise With Good Food, Great Drinks, and Relaxing Vibes

There are only three things I need to have a relaxing stay at a beach resort: great food, a cozy room, and direct access to the beach. Fatwave Surf Resort in La Union offers all those and so much more, and I can confidently say that my experience lodging there for a quick staycation was among the best and most memorable ones I’ve ever had.

Fatwave Surf Resort, a beachfront hotel and resort along Urbiztondo in San Juan, La Union, perfectly blends together relaxation and fun with its bright yet homey atmosphere, different dining options, its own brand of “nightlife” far away from the crowds, and an amazing view of the sunset. Ever since it opened in 2014, Fatwave Surf Resort has welcomed travelers from all over the country—from solo backpackers to families, barkadas to couples—and seems to continuously improve its services and amenities over the years to give everyone the best weekend getaway possible.

My friends and I stayed at Fatwave Surf Resort’s spacious Premier Family Room with a King Bed, a Double Bed, and a Single Bed/Day Bed. The room is best for 4 pax but can comfortably sleep 6 (extra charges for 2 additional people) and the price (PHP 7,725) already comes with complimentary breakfast and coffee. The room has its own wifi router, very, very cold air-conditioning, a writer’s nook for working (and to store your luggage to keep them out of the way), and a clean bathroom with a shower heater, bidet, and clean towels. The beds were also comfy, with soft pillows and linens.

Other rooms available to book are the Superior Family Room (PHP 7,500/4 pax), Deluxe Family Room (PHP 7,500/4 pax), Classic Triple Room (PHP 4,800/2-3 pax), Double twin Room (PHP 4,800/2 pax), Standard Family Room (PHP 5,800/3 pax), and Barkada Rooms (PHP 7,500/6 pax, PHP 6,500/5 pax).

What made Fatwave Surf Resort stand out for me were the many dining options and bars within the resort. Trust me when I say that everything we ate and drank was so, so good! The Fatwave Kitchen is where we ate our breakfast, a choice between Filipino and Western. We also had dinner there and a variety of bar chow while enjoying mixed drinks from the Sunset Shack until late at night.

For lunch the next day, we tried Modern Middle Eastern Cuisine at Oia on the second floor together with fun Instagram-perfect cocktails from Tiki Bikini.

Don’t miss out on the pastries and coffee of La Gula! Their Pain au Chocolat is among the best I’ve ever eaten, and their assorted danish, cookies, croissants, and cakes are just as heavenly. Definitely purchase a box of their different desserts to bring home when you check out!

But of course, the highlight of our stay was our stay at the beach which was easily accessible from the resort. I loved just lounging on the sand while my friends had their surfing lessons. Because we were there on a weekday, there weren’t a lot of people crowding the beach. We stayed to watch the sunset and lingered even as night fell—relishing the cool evening breeze, the relaxing sound of the crashing waves, and each other’s company.

By the way, if you ever encounter someone who offers to take pictures of you, say yes and then tell him that you’ll decide if you’ll get the printed pictures later. Chances are you will anyway because when we took a look at the pictures he took, turned out really great!

There’s no need to go far either when you want to enjoy the nightlife. As mentioned, the drinks at Fatwave Surf Resort are really good and will get you properly buzzed, whether you’ll be staying there ’til late or just want to pre-game. Every day, you can enjoy signature cocktails for 20% off during Happy Hour from 2 PM to 8 PM at the Sunset Shack, and, on the weekends, you can jam to the beats of a live DJ!

When in La Union, Fatwave Surf Resort truly is a beach paradise for those who want a restful getaway from the city with easy access to plenty of activities and amenities to keep you entertained, refreshed, and well-fed. I’m looking forward to the next time I’ll be back for its epic waves, delicious eats, gorgeous views, and chill vibes!
