LOOK: Eastern Samar Gets its Own Rainbow Crosswalk for Pride Month

The LGBTQ+ community of Eastern Samar kicked off Pride Month with a pedestrian crosswalk they painted in rainbow colors along the national highway in San Julian, Eastern Samar.

The San Julian Pride Advocacy Group shared on Facebook that their rainbow crosswalk signified their desire to be seen and heard in their small town.

“It is a strong assertion of our LGBT+ identity in our rural setting — that we will not be rendered invisible, we will see and will be seen; we will not be silenced, we will amplify our voice; we will not be set aside, we will claim our equal place at the table,” they wrote.

The group also wanted to show that San Julian is a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community. “This Pride crosswalk is our welcoming embrace to the LGBT+ people of Eastern Samar and everywhere that San Julian is a safe space by the implementation of our municipal Anti-Discrimination Ordinance (ADO) that we determinedly lobbied,” they said.

“Our Pride crosswalk is our invitation for everyone to join us in our struggle for acceptance and equality,” they added. “Our Pride crosswalk is our visual reminder that we have come a long way and we still have a long way to go.”

San Julian is the first area in Eastern Visayas to have its own Pride Lane. The project was done with the approval of the provincial office of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
