Of course, a powerful singer and a powerful song only calls for a director who can match up, so it turns out, Adele rang 26-year-old Cannes Award-winning director Xavier Dolan to direct the music video for Adele’s major comeback.

One teeny detail was not lost on netizens however, and it’s the “ancient” flip phone Adele used in the video!

According to Xavier Dolan however, the flip phone was a specific aesthetic choice, and has a really simple explanation.

Reports say, according to the director:

“I could see the GIFs on Twitter. I’m like,  ‘guys, get over it. It doesn’t matter.’ But the real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. They’re so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies you’re reminded you’re in reality.”

“If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they’re anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I’m making a commercial.

In fact, the phone booth in the video actually has more meaning than the flip phone everyone’s going crazy over:

“It says she is stranded in nature, which has regained its rights,” he says. “It’s an element of the past. It’s much more important than the flip [phone] and trying to identify whether it’s Samsung or an AE9 or whatever.”

As far as we’re concerned, Adele could use two soup cans and a string and we’d still watch that video over and over!
