Serving as the Pro-Prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, Cardinal Tagle was entrusted with a deeply symbolic and historic role: the presentation of the “Ring of the Fisherman.”
Also known as the Anulus Piscatoris in Latin, the “Ring of the Fisherman” is traditionally bestowed upon the pope at the beginning of his papacy. It symbolizes his role as the successor of Saint Peter, who was a fisherman by trade.
Each ring is unique and personal to the reigning pope. According to Vatican News, Pope Leo XIV continues this tradition with a specially designed ring featuring an image of St. Peter holding the keys and a net—signaling the passing of the torch as he becomes the 267th pope of the Catholic Church.
Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, made history as the first American pontiff. He was elected as Pope Francis’ successor on the second day of the conclave, held on May 8.
