The breakthrough artist has previously released songs with a recurring theme. His songs like Saan? and Bakit? went viral while also sticking with a consistent pattern: one-word questions.

This time, he has released three songs inspired by colors. His chart-topping single Dilaw explores self-love while Namumula portrays a person’s passionate yet unrequited love.

Meanwhile, Bughaw redefines the color “blue” not as something sad or melancholic, but as a love that lasts forever.

Upon being asked how he conceptualized and wrote Bughaw, the 25-year-old musician revealed that it was much more “complex” than Dilaw and Namumula.

“Ito ‘yung pinaka-mature na nagawa kong kanta (This is my most mature song),” he told the media during the Bughaw Hour launch. “It’s not just about reminiscing, it’s not just about recreating or going back to memory lane. It talks about longevity, a love that lasts forever.”

While releasing a song that can easily top the charts and go viral on social media is a goal for many musicians, Maki continues to prove that creating music that genuinely touches hearts is just as, if not more, meaningful and impactful.

With Bughaw, he shared that the song might be a “grower” for listeners compared to his previous releases.

“It has a certain audience. It’s not for the masses, and I know that, but it touches hearts… And the people that resonated with Bughaw ay yung mga taong may love na is so deep, but is so silent,” he said.

Beyond Bughaw‘s depth and meaning as a song, its music video also highlights the hitmaker’s keen attention to detail and directorial skills. The four-minute music video, which also stars HORI7ON’s Kyler, Alexei Abella, and Zeke Abella, takes viewers on a heartwarming journey set on a breathtaking backdrop.

At its core, the music video beautifully portrays how memories may fade into the past, but love continues to linger.

“The concept of the music video is about friendship, but it also talks a lot about being there for another person, and that’s a love that everyone needs,” he shared.

Bughaw may not be the kind of song that reminds you of someone who broke your heart, but it carries a universal message about how love transcends time and leaves a lasting imprint on our lives.

“This kind of love, the Bughaw love that I’m really talking about is the love that you share with your friends, yung alam mo sa sarili na kahit matanda na kayo, na-experience niyo ‘yung (that feeling when you know that even as you grow older, you still get to experience) different aspects of life as you grow old and you know that this person is your blue,” he said.

Maki is an award-winning singer-songwriter known for his heartfelt songs. In November 2024, he became the OPM artist with the most monthly listeners on Spotify Philippines.

He is set to release his first-ever full-length album Kolorcoaster, which will feature ten songs including his previous releases Dilaw, Namumula, and Bughaw.
